Elder Abuse Awareness Month was launched in June 2006 to bring awareness and voice opposition to any form of abuse of the older generation. The Native tradition is to honor our elders. Native elders are respected for their years of experience, wisdom and insight. Unfortunately, the elderly can still be victims of domestic violence.

This week Haven advocates attended the “Women Are Sacred Conference” virtual event which featured numerous workshops and speakers. The conference which is organized by the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center is an annual event which connects 1000’s of advocates across the country who share the mission to end violence against American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian women.

Did you know that rape kit backlog is a huge problem in America? I recently learned about this issue from the RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network) organization. RAINN is encouraging constituents to contact legislators to fully fund the Debbie Smith Act.
