Legal abuse, sometimes also referred to as litigation abuse or post-separation legal abuse, is a tactic abusers use to try and retain power and control over a survivor after separation. They do so by utilizing the legal system to harass, intimidate, or threaten the survivor. It can be exhausting, financially draining and traumatizing for a survivor to have to continue to see their abusive partner or respond to the abuser’s court filings, all under the guise of being “legal.”

Isolation is a central tactic in domestic violence, used by abusers to gain power and maintain control over their victims. It involves deliberately cutting a person off from friends, family, financial resources, and support systems, leaving them increasingly dependent on the abuser. This manipulation can be subtle at first—discouraging outside relationships or creating conflict with loved ones—but it often escalates into complete social and emotional confinement.

Being this is the last day of April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we’re focusing on consent. Often when we talk about consent we think about older teen , but the conversation really needs to take place much earlier.
