When a friend or family member is in a relationship where they are being abused it can be difficult to know how to help. What seems simple to an outsider is very complicated for the person experiencing the abuse.
A tool frequently used by Domestic Violence advocates is the Power and Control Wheel. The information on this simple illustration guides the conversation when an advocate is visiting with a client trying to discern what type of abuse the client is experiencing. And it can be eye opening for clients seeing in “black and white” that their experiences are validated, and that people do truly understand what they are living through.
