Folks often ask, especially those who have never experienced abuse, “why don’t they just leave?” They don’t understand that leaving a violent relationship is more complicated than it seems.

When someone tells you that they were sexually assaulted, the best way to respond is simply to Start by Believing. Survivors are often afraid that others won’t believe them, or that they will blame them for what happened, so it is important to simply listen and offer support and whatever types of assistance they want. Let them take the lead on what they need from you.

According to the Department of Justice: “1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually assaulted by the time they reach 18”. If your child has the courage to tell you…your first step is to stay calm, listen, and let them know you believe them.
