The Official 20th Anniversary of
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
- 1940’s -1950’s – The civil rights era activists for equal rights began to challenge the status quo of race based and gender- based violence
- 1970’s- Wide social activism around the issue of sexual assault brought support to survivors and awareness
- 1980’s- Survivors and advocates were mobilized and began to call for legislation and funding
- 1990’s- Violence Against Women Act of 1993 demonstrated that national efforts promoting sexual violence prevention was needed
- 2001- Sexual Assault Awareness Month was nationally observed with Teal recognized as the color of sexual violence prevention
Over the last decade SAAM has continued to bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault as well as focused on prevention with campaigns designed to encourage individuals and communities
to stop sexual assault before it happens by changing behaviors and promoting respect.
