Haven FYI – Friday April 29, 2022

Hello everyone –

As April comes to an end, we want to focus one more week on Sexual Assault Awareness. This week we’re focusing on the “Start By Believing Campaign” https://startbybelieving.org/home/

FACT:

MOST SEXUAL ASSAULTS AREN’T REPORTED- As few as one in five victims report their sexual assault, so they often don’t get the help they need. Without a report, law enforcement misses the chance to identify perpetrators in their community, repeat offenders go undetected, and more people are victimized.

FACT:

RESEARCH STUDIES ESTIMATE THAT JUST 2-8% OF SEXUAL ASSAULT REPORTS ARE FALSE.

IT’S TIME TO START BY BELIEVING

Sexual assault survivors often face disbelief and blame when they disclose their abuse, decreasing the chance they’ll report to police or seek help. This is why End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) created Start by Believing (SBB), the global campaign challenging each of us to do better. In the 10 years since SBB was founded, hundreds of communities have launched campaigns, 8 states have issued formal proclamations (OKLAHOMA IS ONE OF THOSE STATE), and thousands of individuals have taken the personal pledge to Start by Believing when someone comes to them for help.

You can help by taking just a few minutes and watching this video about Oklahoma’s pledge and you too can START BY BELIEVING!
