Emotional abuse is a form of manipulation or control that undermines an individual’s sense of self-worth. If often involves tactics like belittling, constant criticism, humiliation, gaslighting and isolation.
Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse can be harder to recognize, since it doesn’t leave physical marks. It can happen in subtle ways that make it easy for the victim to question their own reality or feelings. Many people in emotionally abusive relationships struggle to identify what is happening because they have been manipulated into believing what they are experiencing is normal.
