As I prepared this FYI, I looked up every heartbreaking story. Such tragic loss. Any of us could have a loved one listed on this poster. None of us are exempt.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) is officially releasing its 2021 “Remember My Name” today, marking the 28th addition to the collection. The poster’s release coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in October. This year’s image was designed by the SM Collective and can be downloaded from the NCADV website.

The 2021 Remember My Name includes the names, ages, and states of 467 victims killed by domestic violence abusers last year. “As always this registry and associated poster reminds us of how much we are still in crisis when it comes to domestic violence. The impact to their families cannot be measured but the poster serves to remind us of the loss and how much we must continue our work toward ending domestic violence,” says Ruth M. Glenn, NCADV’s President of Public Affairs.

NCADV, in conjunction with Ms. Magazine, started the Remember My Name project in 1994 to create a national registry of names to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths. Since then, NCADV has continued to collect information on incidents of women and others who have been killed by an intimate partner and produces an image in memoriam each year for Domestic Violence Awareness Month listing the names of those submitted. NCADV is creating as complete a registry as possible of women, children and men who have lost their lives due to domestic violence.

Domestic violence is prevalent in every community and affects all people regardless of age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. In the United States, an average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute, which equates to more than 10 million abuse victims each year.
