With Survivors, Always”
This year’s national Domestic Violence Awareness Month theme is , “With Survivors, Always,” emphasizes unwavering, ongoing support for survivors of domestic violence — not just during October, but every single day.
In our roles at HAVEN Program, this is our mission.  We walk alongside survivors through crisis, healing, and justice. We provide safety, resources, and unwavering support — always. But you don’t have to work in this field to be an advocate.
Being “with survivors, always” is not just a for those of us that work in the field — it’s a community responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in creating a world where survivors are believed, supported, and safe.
Here are 4 ways anyone can be an advocate for survivors:
  1. Listen and Believe Survivors
When someone shares their story, believe them. Listen without judgment or pressure. Your support can be the difference between silence and healing.
  2. Learn the Signs and Share Resources
Educate yourself on the signs of abuse and learn how to respond. Know your local resources — like HAVEN — so you can connect others to help when needed.
  3. Speak Up Against Harmful Language and Behavior
Challenge jokes, comments, or behaviors that minimize abuse or blame survivors. Advocacy starts with everyday conversations.
  4. Show Support Publicly on Purple Thursday
Join HAVEN and others across the country by wearing purple on Purple Thursday (October 17th). It’s a simple yet powerful way to honor survivors, raise awareness, and show you’re with them — always. Stop by and pick up a purple shirt at the Client Center on Tuesday – be intentional in helping to create a community where survivors are supported and safe.
Thanks for your support!
