Hello everyone-
Yesterday we sent out a reminder for our final day of the Rock Away the Silence event. Today…we’re sending out our weekly email giving folks something to think about. This week’s email focuses on men and domestic violence. Specifically, that domestic violence comes in many forms and men and boys are often victims.
Please take just one and half minutes and watch this video…(please be aware that the video content does contain profane language)
How we perceive domestic violence and who are victims of domestic violence makes a difference. Were you upset when you saw the woman being abused in the video? Now what was your response when you saw her…pushing him?
“Helping men who are victims of sexual and domestic violence includes breaking the silence around their victimhood and breaking barriers to their support. Being a victim is not a sign of weakness.”
Remember…violence is violence!
“Many men feel great shame that they’ve been abused, been unable to stand up for themselves, or somehow failed in their role as a male, husband, or father. If you’re a man in an abusive relationship, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. Abuse of men happens far more often than you might expect—in both heterosexual and same sex relationships. It happens to men from all cultures and all walks of life regardless of age or occupation. However, men are often reluctant to report abuse because they feel embarrassed, fear they won’t be believed, or are scared that their partner will take revenge”.
1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing) and in some cases might not be understood as domestic violence.
