In this week’s FYI we’re focusing on “rape culture”. Through media (especially with the coverage of the Epstein files) you might have heard the term “rape culture”, but do we know what it means? Not always. However, I bet you’ve heard “boys will be boys” and the idea that we need to teach girls to avoid getting assaulted – “don’t wear a skirt too short”, “did she think about what this could do to him before she blamed him” and “watch where you park your car at night or where you walk at night”. Let’s know what the term is and then go a step further and learn tools on how to change it.

Haven FYI – Friday February 20, 2026
Rape myths are damaging and false beliefs about rape and sexual assault that are perpetuated when individuals make judgements about survivors based on these inaccurate beliefs. They are sometimes spread because it is easier for people to believe the survivor must have done something to deserve being raped or sexually assaulted. This belief allows people to feel they are safer because they protect themselves. However, survivors are not to blame for an offender’s behavior. Sexual assault is a crime, and responsibility lies only with the perpetrator.

There is positive news coming out of Tennessee this month related to domestic violence. While this law is specific to Tennessee, we’re really encouraged to see this kind of progress and what it represents for victims and survivors more broadly.
