It All Starts with an Ember: Feed the Fire

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The 2021 theme: It All Starts with an Ember: Feed the Fire.

Fire is vital to our daily survival in multiple ways. It offers a source of warmth, provides light against darkness, heats, and cooks our food, purifies water, and cleanses the landscape of old, destructive growth. Every tribe or nation has its own stories and language referencing fire. For centuries, it’s been the centerpiece of family, community, and ceremonial gatherings. Fire has always been a way to draw people together. Around the fire discussion is held, important decisions are made, meals are shared, laughter is heard, and ceremonial dances and songs to honor the Creator are carried out. Fire cultivates unity, well-being, and renewal. Fire is good medicine.

Everyone in the community helped to keep the fire going. One gathered wood, while another maintained the fire. And once the big fire was lit, the embers were shared with others to draw families to their own campsite fires.  As we learn and address domestic violence our knowledge should pass from one to another as the embers passed from one fire to the other, furthering and continuing the fire. Like the passing of an ember, our knowledge is passed on to the next generations. We are the fire, passing knowledge to others giving them light, knowledge and education.

Haven FYI emails this month will discuss different ways that each of us can “Feed the Fire” to bring awareness and societal change regarding domestic violence.
