Hello all –
This month we want to focus on defining what is domestic violence and what kind of services Haven Provides.
What is Domestic Violence and What Kind of Services Does Haven Provide?
What Is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors one person uses to gain power and control over an intimate partner or family member. It is not simply an argument or disagreement—it is a repeated pattern of abuse that can leave lasting emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial harm.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, culture, income, or background. It occurs in dating relationships, marriages, among former partners, and within families. While physical violence is one form of abuse, many people experience abuse that leaves no visible injuries.
Domestic violence may include:
- Physical abuse: Hitting, slapping, choking, pushing, restraining, or any unwanted physical harm.
- Emotional or psychological abuse: Insults, humiliation, intimidation, threats, manipulation, or making someone feel afraid or worthless.
- Sexual abuse: Any sexual activity without freely given consent, including coercion or assault.
- Financial abuse: Controlling money, preventing someone from working, or creating financial dependence.
- Digital abuse: Monitoring phones or social media, tracking someone’s location, or using technology to threaten or control.
- Spiritual or cultural abuse: Using cultural teachings, traditions, spirituality, or community relationships to shame, manipulate, isolate, or control another person.
Domestic violence affects more than the person being abused. Children, extended family members, and the entire community can experience its impacts. In Tribal communities, domestic violence can also disrupt cultural connections, traditions, and the well-being of future generations.
Healthy relationships are built on respect, trust, honesty, communication, and safety. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their relationships and in their home.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, know that you are not alone. Help is available. Our program provides confidential, culturally responsive advocacy, support, safety planning, and connections to resources.
Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and healing is possible.
While we focus on domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking advocacy we assist all current victims of crime. We currently provide advocacy and services to all Eastern Shawnee, regardless of where they live, and non-members within the tribe’s service area of Ottawa County Oklahoma, and the cities of Vinita, Grove, Jay Oklahoma, and Seneca MO.
What kinds of services does Haven provide?
Our Services
Our program offers two primary types of services: Emergency Services and Long-Term Transitional Housing Services.
Emergency Services are designed to address the immediate safety and urgent needs of individuals experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault. These services may include crisis advocacy, short-term legal advocacy, counseling referrals, safety planning, emergency shelter or safe housing assistance, food, clothing, replacement of essential documents such as birth certificates and identification cards, transportation assistance, and referrals to additional community resources.
Our Long-Term Transitional Housing Services are available to eligible participants and focus on helping survivors build safe, stable, and independent lives. This program provides ongoing advocacy and supportive services that promote long-term safety, housing stability, financial independence, and self-sufficiency as survivors move forward on their healing journey.
All of our advocates are specially trained in domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy and are committed to providing compassionate, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive support. In addition to their core advocacy training, our team includes advocates with specialized expertise in emergency services, legal advocacy, sexual assault services, transitional housing and self-sufficiency, child and family advocacy, temporary safe housing, and services for Eastern Shawnee Tribal members living outside of Oklahoma. This allows us to connect survivors with advocates who have the knowledge and experience to best meet their unique needs.
